Creative idea of the Month

This month: The blindfold walk.

Continuing the theme of inspirational leadership, this month we look at building trust.

As leaders we require others to follow our advice and procedures.  In order to be effective, we must be deemed trustworthy.  If you wish participants and /or team members to make themselves vulnerable, you must nurture their efforts regardless of the outcome!

Incorporate trust building exercises into workshops, meetings and team gatherings in order to help the process of enhancing trust, creativity and teamwork.

The objective of the exercise below is to help the participants learn to trust each other by the means of dependency.

- You will need to work in pairs

- It can be done with any size team

- Allow approx 10-20 minutes

- The more room you have available for this exercise the more interesting it is

- Have each pair choose an 'A' and a 'B'

- Ask the A's to close their eyes and the B's to lead them around the room/area by calling their name.

- Instruct participants that the most important rule is that no one gets hurt, so they may say stop, or

touch their partners, if it looks like their safety is at risk. Otherwise they should refrain from saying

  anything but their partner's name.

- After a few minutes ask the pairs to swap roles.

Now debrief and discuss the output.

- How did it feel to follow?

- How did it feel to lead?

- Which was more comfortable?

- what did you explore?

- How many risks did you take, was the outcome successful?

- Did you trust your leader / your follower - did trust increase or decrease?
