One of the major barriers to moving
forward is the lack of a clear picture of where we want to be. We use our minds 'eye' all the time in our daily life. We do
this, for example, when we imagine how a room will look its been decorated or
where we want to go on holiday.
One great technique to exercise our
minds eye and create a clearer picture of where we are going is 'conscious
visualisation'. This technique can be practised alone or in a group.
Make sure you are comfortable in
the environment you are in, e.g. sitting down and relaxed.
Now make sure that everyone
involved is aware and understands the issue that is being looked at, for
example, starting up a new business or entering a new market.
- Close your eyes, take 1 or 2
minutes to let your mind shut down existing thoughts (that means stop
planning the evening meal or what time you need to catch a train)!
- Now let your imagination go.
Picture how things will look if you are already there and whatever needs to
happen has happened.
- Continue to build on the
image, you may want to prompt with questions like:
- what is the environment
like?
- who is involved?
- what are they doing?
- Once the picture is vivid then
take more time to focus on finer detail, e.g. how do you feel, is it good,
is it successful, what else could be done?
- Allow 15-20 minutes before you
ask people if they have enough information and ideas from their
visualisation to start collating them. If not, then allow more time.
- If anyone is having difficulty
creating a picture try it from another angle. Imagine that you are in
the future and looking back to the 'thing' that has already happened.
So you look back to see how it worked, what was good/bad, what would you do
differently ?
- You may want to try both
angles before you collate ideas and images. Whichever way you do it
don't dismiss any images or ideas until they have been clarified by the 'visualiser'
and explored in more detail.
Have fun and good luck for the
'future'
